If you cross it going away from the US towards Japan, you're robbed of 24 hours

and you don't get them at all.

If you cross it going from Japan towards the US, you get to live the previous 24 hours

all over again.

If you cross the line twice in opposite directions, then it all cancels out.

It's a lot like changing your clocks to daylight savings time and then back to standard time,

only the change is 24 times as much.
