The religious divide you speak of requires a great deal of insight to explain. I don't think there is anything quite like the hostile divergence that exists between different factions of monotheism. Basically the Abrahmic faiths, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The greatest distinction between modern religions seems to be one of East and West. In monotheistic faiths there is a willingness to accept mythology as historical fact, whereas in all other religious systems Mythology is understood to be allegory. Mythology is a story that illuminates profound and repetitive experiences that derive from the the reality of human experience. Most of the tumultuous and hostile conflict that occurs within the monotheistic faiths derives from this basic misunderstanding of the purpose of Mythology, it is war and murder over the details of comparable learning, Mnemonic Devices.
