Yes, they do!

The term 'Village idiot' found it's first use in Australia during the mass migration of English convicts during the years 1851-1859. English convicts turned naive gold prospectors would mistake the country's abundant supply of Pyrite (more commonly known as 'Fools Gold') for gold. After many red-faced gold prospectors failed to hit pay dirt, the then modestly established economy, consisting largely of small villages would besmirch the failed prospectors by mocking and branding them "Village idiots".

Andrew Barton Patterson - a famous 18th century Australian poet once wrote "Only the village idiot mine for Fools Gold" cementing the term into the foundations of Australian society.

during the mid 1900's, 'Village idiots' are an accepted and revered part of the work force, receiving a government subsidy (usually around 5,000 Australian Dollars P/A) for services rendered to the public and the state.

Today however, there is no such official role of "The Village Idiot" - But rather the mantle of the name falls to the local drunks. Due to the increasing problem of Alcoholism in Australia, it is not uncommon to find several 'Village Idiots' inhabiting the same district. The township of Austrailia recognize these people as the modern day "Village Idiots" and can easily be distinguished by the Velour Capuchon and high visibility vest they are required to wear by law so the rest of the township can readily spot and avoid them and their rancid stench.

Because there is no such official the "Village Idiot" is required to attain to, they usually spend their days wandering the streets in a drunken stupor, earning money through way of dancing for the public when prompted, or when asked for a statement of "wisdom". It is accepted that all phrases of wisdom are not to be taken seriously, as they are the drunken and almost incoherent ramblings from which they can pull from the putrid remains of their alcohol destroyed brains.

Alternative and rather derogatory names for the village idiot in Australia include: "Wandering Woolley", "Piss-head Barry", "Lager Letch" and "Swamp Monster"

I hope this helps!
