No, we do not have the same problems that the Roman Republic had. Although we live in a republic, all republics are not the same and our present day government has different issues than a government of 2,000 years ago would have. The Romans had concerns different from ours and so their laws were different and would have no relevance for someone living today. For example, the Romans farmed out their tax collecting, with the state getting a fixed amount and the tax collector getting anything he could raise over the state's amount. We have a certain rate that we pay. Both tax issues have problems, but the problems are very different. Other issues pertaining to slavery and women's inheritance follow the same pattern.

As the name "Roman Republic" suggests, it was a republic.
The ancient Roman republic had two branches-- the Senate and the Roman people. The magistrates and officials (consuls, praetors, tribune, etc.) were incorporated into the senate, while the votes of the people elected them to their various offices. The ancient Roman republic was not the same as our present day republics even through they are named the same.

The main problem of the Late Republic was political instability. There were 13 civil wars in the last 61 years of the Republic. Great achievement in the late Roman Republic were the development of Roman concrete, the hypocaust (a system of underfloor heating for the houses of the rich and public buildings), realistic portraiture sculpture (busts) and the early stages of Latin literature.
