Adobe Photoshop is used for editing pixel data, ie photographs etc
Adobe Illustrator is for vector images / graphics.
You edit each file type(s) in there program.
A magazine layout would be compiled in Adobe In design (or a program of the same type)
You would enter your text and layout in here, then edit the images / graphics you need in their programs then import them into In design (or equivalent product). To bring it all together.

From Photoshop go to File > Automate > Photomerge or do it from Bridge, select photos you want to merge in panorama then go to Tools > Photoshop > Photomerge...
The custom shapes can be created using the pen tools within Photoshop, you can create them via work paths, you can use type to create custom shapes by converting a letter or more into a custom shape. Personally, I use Illustrator to create custom shapes and copy the shapes to Photoshop and then use the define custom shape command (found in the edit menu)
you can browse your images in Bridge, add tags to find more quickly image you need, rename multiple files, open images in Photoshop Layers, create panorama, create .pdf files, web galery in Bridge.
You can use Photoshop to design: - business cards - menu's - invitations to special events - nice letterhead for personal resume - create logo For many of these, also consider using Adobe InDesign
