The men needed psychological counciling after this event and it was a terrible event to live the rest of your life through. However, Tibbett and a few of his high ranking officers felt it necessary to take so many lives in Japan to save millions. (I suppose they had to tell themselves something to deal with this event, but I still feel as my father did ... he was a pilot) that it was over-kill. This did not stop the Japanese. In 1980 the crew of the 509th found their Enola Gay. Most were stunned, others merely depressed. A few outraged, accusing the Smithsonian of wanton neglect. These crew members have since worked diligently to resurrect the Anola Gay to the state she was in during her term in war.

The government tried to make people believe it was a quick way to end the war, but eventually people began to realize that this was "over-kill" and unjustified because of the mass destruction. Even today generations later there are people still suffering from that radiation. I think it was more about genocide, but then that's only my opinion. I also agree it was over-kill, but I'm sure others will disagree with me. The blame can't just be put on the U.S., because Canada knew about it and had something to do with it in a small way. Big or small if one was involved in this mass destruction then they are at fault as well. It isn't one of the most proudess moments going down in history. The crew on the Anola Gay that dropped the bomb were unaware of the magnitude of this bomb and were devastated by the destruction and it caused some psychological damage. One thing that was a miracle coming out of such a bombing is Japan built their city right back up again and it shows just how durable humans can be. It is also amazing that most Japanese hold no grudges against the Americans.

War & peace is an amazing thing. I think we all learned something from WWII. After the Atom Bomb was dropped it was such a horrific scene (even to the pilot, etc., that dropped the bomb from the Anola Gay) that one would never have guessed Japan could rebuild so fast, but they did. I believe not only they learned some lessons from war, but so did the rest of the countries of the world (or at least most of them.) There are no winners! If you study Japanese Culture (which I love and have studied and my home is decorated in Japanese decor) you'd understand that they are a proud people and their thinking is quite wise. A Japanese soldier honors a brave enemy. If a Japanese soldier is killed by a weak man it is a dishonor (or use to be.) We can learn much from the Japanese as far as wisdom, patience, building, and producing mass exports. They are tops in cars and the future in technology. The Japanese are wise enough to know that the American people of today are not the same people that attacked them on that fateful day and hold no grudges. When in Japan one is treated with honor and everything has a reason in everything they do (not meaning that in a bad way.) Their high priority is honor and truth and they expect the same in return. They are shrewd in business, but fair. We were also at war with Germany, but the world visits Germany and they visit many countries of the world. We human are an odd lot. We make war, fight to the death, cause havock and in time walk along side the culture of the very people we were at war with. The same goes for Vietnam. Me thinks we should all be in straight jackets!

It was the first time the Americans were attacked on their own native soil by another country. The surprise attack by the Japanese was devastating and caught many off guard. It is common when such an act is done (no matter what the reasons ... good or bad) the country attacked fights back. This is a hard question to define. War really is hell and all countries involved in war have done some terrible acts, but it's in the name of saving the country they are fighting for. For instance, I'm not proud of the fact that it was Canada that invented Napalm that has a liquid fiery gel that sticks to it's victim and burns them to death. Is is needed? Some say yes, some say no. The same applied to the Atom Bomb, which many (including some of the crew on the Anola Gay) others fighting in the war and even American citizens and the world at large have been quoted as saying it was horrendous and "over-kill." Was it or was it not? We will never know the total truth of why that act had to come into place. Now there is germ warfare and gases and if someone was truly going to attack your country you'd do anything to protect your family first, then your country. There is no answer to this question. War is like putting a very large bone into the middle of the world and some countries want a larger piece than due them and in order to get that bone they will do anything they can to get what they want. Sometimes it's about oil or just plain raw power and many countries today are fighting over world power. Bottom line, there are no winners in war! They send the worker ants out to do the grunge work while the fat cats sit behind expensive desks. My attitude is, if some of the "fat cats" had to get out in the front lines there would be fewer wars. What politicians son do you know served any purpose in a war and that goes for Canada as well.

The Axis powers, completely defeated with their armies and industries utterly destroyed, incapable of any fiuther resistence, surrendered unconditionally. Michael Montagne Europe: D-Day put allied troops on the ground in Europe. The troops then marched across Europe, engaged Germany at "the battle of the bulge" (which was very bloody) then marched into Germany and forced the surrender of the military at which point Hitler (everyone assumes) committed suicide. The Pacific: After the Japanese navy had been effectively defeated, the Emperor refused to surrender in an attempt to force an invasion force to enter Japan, knowing that perhaps millions would die on both sides of the battle. The Emperor knew that there was no way that he could WIN, he just wanted to get the best terms of surrender possible. Allied forces wanted an unconditional surrender with guarantees that Japan would not again attempt to invade the islands of the Pacific so the Japanese goal was not acceptable. Japan had been surrounded, no supplies were comming in. Conventional bombing burned entire cities. There was disease and starvation and still the Emperor would not surrender. Finally, the President of the United States allowed the Air Force to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima in an attempt to force surrender. The Emperor still refused, telling his people that we could not do that again because we only had one such bomb. When the president authorized the second bomb on Nagasaki, the Emperor still resisted surrender, but finally, after much deliberation, decided that his people were suffering.
