You don't have to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the"Mormon" church) to attend BYU, but the tuition is generally higher if you're not. Many of the athletes at BYU are not members of the Church, and many others who are not Church members but just want to attend a university with conservative values attend there.

Answer:

Snort. You've found the church's achilles' heel. There are half a gazillion Mormons, and only 32,000 slots at the University (plus a few thousand more at the Idaho and Hawaii campuses.)

It's not even close. The vast, vast majority of Mormon college students cannot get into BYU. The academic standards are just too brutal.

Another answer:

No, definitely not. BYU couldn't possibly accommodate all the college age Mormons. Less than 10% of college-aged Mormons attend BYU.

In fact, non-Mormon applicants with outstanding credentials have a somewhat easier time getting admitted over their similarly credentialled LDS counterparts. It can be quite difficult for Mormon applicants to be accepted, especially if they are from Utah, because BYU seeks to have a diverse student body.

No. Some positions at BYU require membership in the church, but many do not and are open to qualified people of any faith.

Be aware that all BYU employees and students are required to follow the BYU Honor Code, which means that regardless of your faith, as a BYU employee you:

-may not consume alcohol, tobacco, tea, coffee, or illegal drugs

-must refrain from sexual relationships outside of a legal marriage

-must attend religious services (of any religion) weekly

-must follow the dress code (no tank tops, no shorts/skirts above the knee, short hair for men, no peircings, etc.)

-must be honest, chaste, virtuous, respect others, and use clean language

This Honor Code applies "at all times and in all places"- not just when you are at work on campus. If it becomes known that you have violated the Honor Code you may be terminated.

No, you do not need to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) to teach at BYU, but church members are generally preferred.
