Initially you join the coast guard and are shipped to Cape May NJ for boot camp. If you are looking to be an officer it is in New London CT. From there you fill out a dream sheet of where you would "like" to go and the person who writes your orders to new duty stations (detailer) will look at that and see if there is any openings, if not then you will be sent to wherever the CG deems neccissary. We have units in the Middle East and some of our ships travel all over the world. We have units all along our coasts east, west, Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi river, great lakes, and Alaska to name a few. If you are looking for the most ablitiy to stay in one area I recommend BM (boatswains mate) or MK (Machinery Technician) our 2 largest ratings that have billets at just about every unit in the coast guard.
The US Coast Guard only protects the United States, they do not go over seas to fight.
The coast guard does go to war. I am currently in the coast guard and we have been involved in every major war. Not many casualties because our role isn't one involving combat, but we do provide a lot of support. here is a link to the coast guard website that shows which wars we've been involved in: http://www.uscg.mil/History/faqs/wars.asp
The origins of the Coast Guard go back to Alexander Hamilton recommending to Congress to create an agency to protect the fledgling United States' maritime commerce from the British. American commercial vessels were heavily preyed upon by pirates and British privateers. In 1790, Congress authorized the creation of the Revenue Cutter Service and the building of about a dozen cutters. in 1848, local humanitarian effects and other private interests came together into a government agency called the United States Life Saving Service. This agency set up life saving stations throughout the country that utilized small boats and lyle guns to rescue shipwreck victims. In 1915, these two agencies were combined to create the modern day Coast Guard. The Coast Guard was just a pirvate thing along time ago to save people when ships wrecked in storms. they used row boats and men with oars. The government decided to take over this and now we have the U.S. Coast Guard.
It is called Manifest Destiny.
The services use different insignia for different ranks. A double silver bar in the army is a captain. In the Navy and the Coast Guard that same insignia is a Lt. Go to www.military.com and they may show you the different insignias.

No, you don't. If you go through Marine Corps Bootcamp, and you get out. You don't have to go through any other services Basic Training. But if you were to get out of any other branch and join the Marines, you would have to go through Marine Corps bootcamp.
The Coast Guard is important to us because when boaters or rafters are stuck out in the middle of no where or in distress the Coast Guard are the ones that go out an save people. While the Navy, Marines, Army, and Air Force are unable to do so.
The coast guard is a branch of the military. Most small boat operations in armed conflicts are driven by a coastie . Most of the landing craft driven onto the beaches of normandy where skippered by the coast guard. They are armed and even go on special ops missions with teams like the seals. They also board drug running boats and shot 50cal machine guns . A far cry from lifeguards
