In most cases, no, however if you are having issues getting the piston into the caliper, it may be seized, or it may be a turn in caliper.

How do you get the piston back in the caliper on the rear of a 2002 Cougar you've tried the Cclamp route but its not going in either side?

did you try to loosen the bleeder screw before using the c clamps You have to turn the piston clockwise in order for it to go back into the caliper.

How do you compress the piston on a 1996 grand prix back brakes?

Loosen the bleeder screw then squeeze the piston with a large channel lock pliers or C-clamp. I have a 96 Grand Prix SE and had the same problem....has to be screwed in not pushed in. Take the calipers off & take them to Auto Zone - they will do it for free.

How to push in the piston even if the bleeder is open it still wont go back in?

open the bleeder valve I'm assuming your talking about a disk brake, you need to use a C clamp and the old brake pads to force the piston back into the caliper. If it had a X in the head of the piston you need to get the tool to turn it back in. If all that doesn't work, the caliper is frozen and it needs to be replaced

How do you push caliper piston back in?

There is a specialty tool for this procedure. There is a metal plate that fits on the piston, then a clamp for the back of the caliper. Turning a screw will pull in the caliper. Opening the bleeder valve may be necessary.

How do you make a brake piston retract?

Most times just a clamp will push it back in but if it gives too much trouble you may need to loosen the bleeder. Some rear pistons for disk brakes need to be turned back in and a special tool is available for the job at your local parts store.

How do I get the cylinder to move in on a 95 Lincoln Mark VIII with rear disk brakes?

loosen the bleeder screw and use a "C" clamp to push the piston back in. Loosening the bleeder screw will allow air to get into the system and the brakes will have to be bled !!!The rear calibers have the emergency brakes attached. You have to rent a kit from your local auto parts store!! The cylinder has to be rotated to move in!!!

How do you change pads on a 1993 Ford F150 when the piston will not slide in easily?

Loosen the top of the brake reservoir. You will then need a c clamp, and an old pad to force the piston back into it's bore. IF U use a C-Clamp 2 compress the Calipher Piston YOU need 2 loosen the Bleeder Screw because U don't want 2 push (old Dirty Brake Fluid) Back up into the Master Cylinder BECAUSE if U have an ANTI-LOCK System U can DAMAGE the Brake Unit with OLD & dirty Fluid-U need 2 change the brake fluid every 2 years-IF the Piston is really hard 2 REtract then U MIGHT need a CALIPHER MAKE sure the C-Clamp is CENTERED on the Piston B 4 U start.

How do you get the piston out to change the back disc brakes on a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix?

You don't remove the piston, you just compress it. Loosen the cap on the master cylinder and then compress the piston all the way in. You can then remove the old pad and install a new one.

How do you loose a bleeder on rear brakeson a 99 ford ranger?

on any vehicle I have found that if you use a socket on the bleeder valve first to loosen it then tighten it , you can get a wrench on it to bleed your brakes (CAUTION.. DO NOT FORCE, gently pull down on the bleeder,if it does not want to come loose at first, work it back and forth and try some rust penetrant),BUT BE CAREFUL!!!!

How do you remove the rear brakes on a 2003 Buick LeSabre?

If it's disk brakes, it's about like the front, except that it takes a lot of torque to get the caliper piston to go back in. It really is hard to get back in, once you do then your set. Use a large 8" or greater C-Clamp to compress the piston. Here is how: 1) Remove the back bolts holding the caliper assembly, loosen the top one first, but do not remove it yet. The bottom bolt does not come out--that's why it has a torx head; it's only removed for rotor replacement. 2) Remove the pads. 3) Loosen the bleeder screw so you don't send dirty fluid back through the ABS unit. 4) Use a spanner wrench to turn the piston back in to the bore. The piston can only be moved about 1 mm without damaging the emergency brake mechanism. The rotor screws in. Do not force the piston in using a C-clamp, etc. 5) After seating the piston put on the new pads. 5) When finished bleed each side until clean clear fluid comes out. 6) If possible bleed the front calipers too. Bleeding out older fluid helps length life of the calipers.

How do you bleed a slave cylinder on a 1996 ford ranger?

press down on the clutch, keep it pressed down, and have another person loosen the bleeder screw with the clutch depressed, then tighten it back up and release the clutch. Do this several times until you get a steady stream of fluid (with no air in the fluid) and be sure a keep the clutch master cyl. full at all times, because it will lose fluid when you bleed it Note: if the bleeder screw is tore up, you can always loosen the hose where it enters the slave, and do the same process, using the hose inlet instead of the bleeder screw.
