No it is not necessary to remove the axle nut in order to remove the front caliper. Once you remove the caliper the rotor should come off.
chanching rotors on a pacifica is simple pull out the cotter pin in the middle and the rotor should come right off
I assume that you have removed the wheel and so on. In order to remove the rotor you will have to remove the caliper and its bracket. Only after you will be able to remove the rotor.
Remove the hubcaps and wheels. Remove the two large bolts that hold the brake caliper to the steering knuckle. pull the caliper out of the way. There are two large Philips head screws that hold the rotor to the hub. Remove them and slide the rotor off the hub. Just did this to my '96. Hope it helps

To Remove either the front or rear brake rotor, you must first remove the tire and wheel to expose the caliper. Then you remove the caliper, there are two bolts, the heads facing outward toward you if you are at the wheel well. There is one bolt at the top, and one at the bottom. After removing the bolts, you can then take a large flathead screwdriver and pry the caliper away from the the rotor. The rotor will now slip of of the wheel lugs.
