Ignition Lock Cylinder
Removal & Installation
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Detach the key warning chime connector.
3. Turn the key to the RUN position.
4. Place a 1/8 in. wire, pin, or small drift punch into the upper steering column shroud under the lock cylinder. Depress the retaining pin while pulling the lock cylinder out of the column.
To install:
5. Install the lock cylinder by turning the key to RUN position and depressing the retaining clip.
6. Insert the lock cylinder until it is fully seated and aligned with the inter-locking washer.
7. Turn the key to the OFF position, allowing the retaining pin to properly seat.
8. Install the 2 shroud halves and retaining screws.
9. Connect the negative battery cable.
10. Check for proper starting in PARK and NEUTRAL.
do I remove steering wheel to change out ignition
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove steering column covers Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition switch Remove the screw retaining the switch to the steering column
you must remove the steering wheel and turn signal from column. then you can acces the screw to remove the switch.
Remove the screws on the side of the steering column. Remove the screws underneath the steering column and pull the bottom half of the column down. Slide a pin punch into the hole at the ignition tumbler assembly's bottom. Force the tumbler upwards and pull it out of the steering column.
remove column dust covers, along with ignition switch. then remove retaining
remove the lower shroud on the steering column, and then the 2 bolts that hold the column in place, it should be accessable then.

You will have to remove the steering wheel and everythin that surrounds the steering column in order to get the ignition switch out. I would suggest getting a good repair manual as this is not an easy process to describe without pictures and such.
"you can't unless you grind off the bolts from the steering column bracket. Most times people just change the whole steering column because its all part of one unit." Actually, you can do it without grinding the bolts - remove the lower trim panel (below the steering wheel) insert your ignition key and turn it to acc on the bottom of the ignition switch, there is a button you have to push in and you can then remove the switch
remove the steering wheel. unbolt the collar that holds the steering column underneath the dash. that plastic box halfway down the column with all of those wires hanging out of it is your ignition.
it's located inside the steering column. Remove 3 screws on the lower steering column cover. Its the white plastic on the oposite side of the ignition.
