Yes, in USA. There are so many different antibiotics for many different ailments, you wouldn't know which one you need. The doctor has to write a prescription.

If you know what is wrong and you have been a patient of this doctor for a long time a phone call will suffice in most cases ( I've done it many times) he can call it in or you can pick it up at the office. My Doctor is not money hungry.

To add to the above: it's very important you get antibiotics prescribed to you by your doctor rather than self medicating. I think it's in most peoples minds that antibiotics aren't narcotics and aren't dangerous but they can be very dangerous. You may find you have an allergy to them Penicillan or Sulfa are the most common. I have a Sulfa allergy and antibiotics containing sulfa make me extremely sick. Also, when antibiotics are misused or OVER used it can cause bacteria to mutate which is why there so many antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria and as you can imagine that is not good. There can also be interactions to other medications you are taking and you should tell your doctor if you are other meds. You need to A) get the right antibiotic for your illness or it won't work. B) under doctor supervision in case you have an allergic reaction and so that if you are on other meds they can ensure they won't interact with each other and C) never under any circumstance stop taking them because you "feel better" always take all of them the entire time prescribed.

How can you stop biting your tongue because of stress or anxiety while on antidepressant medication?

Hello, I can reassure you this will not cause tongue cancer but it may result in a mouth ulcer which appears on your tongue instead of your mouth. You should be working with your doctor while on antidepressants. Tell the doctor what is going on and he/she may up the dose or try you on something else. Usually antidepressants get you up and going and you shouldn't be experiencing this. It takes 6 - 8 weeks for a new antidepressant to do it's job. For now wash your mouth out with "Listerine" (antibacterial mouthwash) and then see your doctor.

What if you have tried all antidepressants and they are not helping?

I am not a doctor but I do have a number of years experience with antidepressants. First thing is to take them . It takes weeks to get the the level to the point where it helps you. The second is that if prescribed by your family doctor the dose maybe to low. I was told by my psychiatrist that "most" GP's don't even get to half the dose needed. So if possible see a psychiatrist for the proper dosage. Lastly it took about 5 tries to get the right medication that suited me , we are all different and react differently

What happens if you just stop using antidepressants?

You need to gradually reduce the dose--otherwise you may make things worse and your feelings will go amok. Check in with your doctor before doing so. It is very tempting when you feel well to stop taking medications, but it is short-sighted. Answer Suddenly stopping antidepressants without gradually withdrawing it causes untoward effects. Stopping antidepressants takes you back into depression. Some people in that state have attempted suicide. Many are fed up of antidepressants if they haven't experienced complete relief and desire to stop antidepressants. In this cases 1)It is sensible to inform your doctor 2)with the permission of doctor you may start gradually withdrawing one medicine, stop it. Then another medicine dose be tapered then stopped. At any point if the symptoms of depression return you know that medicine has been useful to you and you continue taking it in the correct dose.

What if Prozac doesn't work?

First, be patient. Many antidepressants take 4-6 six to show signs of improvement while newer generation antidepressants such as Lexapro can show signs of improvement as early as one week. Sometimes antidepressants are working but the effects are subtle. Keep a daily journal of your mood and depressive thoughts (such as thoughts of suicide) to track your progress. If you do not show signs of improvement then talk to your doctor about switching to a different one. The process of finding an effective antidepressant and the effective dose of that antidepressant is sometimes so long and laborious that it is easy to lose track of signs of worsening or improvement. A combination of therapy and antidepressants will be the most effective.
