the pilot bearing is on the crank center of the fly wheel, the smallest end of the transmission shaft will fit into it after it is assembled.
It's behind the timing belt cover on top of the crank pulley.
It is the same thing as a pilot bearing. Goes into the rear of the crankshaft to support the input shaft of the transmission.
I'm going to bet that you didn't line up the plate with a dummy shaft and the pilot shaft is hitting the pilot bearing. That would keep the bell housing from bolting up to the engine and give you about an inch of gap. If you used the old trick of popping the pilot bearing with grease and a drift, and you left the grease in the pilot bearing hole, that would prevent the pilot shaft from seating deep enough.
Research indicates that there is no pilot bearing in the 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer. On some front wheel drives the clutch disk is splined to the main shaft which has two bearings in the transmission case. No pilot bearing is necessary.
If you are asking what a clutch shaft is related to the installation of a clutch, it is a plastic alignment shaft that is used to line the clutch disc up with the pilot bearing in the flywheel, so that when you install the transmission the transmission input shaft will slide thru the clutch splines and into the pilot bearing in the flywheel with relative ease. They are a must for any clutch installation!
I will answer this myself I tried every trick everybody told me I eventually rented a slide hammer puller designed for this. If you have a pilot shaft you can fill the pilot bearing blind hole with wheel bearing grease ( The old thick type works the best ). Then take the pilot shaft and drive it into the hole and it will push the old bearing out. YOU MAY HAVE TO FILL IT WITH GREASE MORE THAN ONCE. Good luck Jerry
That usually refers to the part of a standard transmission that inserts into the crankshaft pilot bearing or bushing.
The spigot bearing AKA clutch pilot bearing, is the bushing that is pressed into the back end of the crankshaft and supports the input shaft of the transmission.
I would recommend that you do put a crank shaft head on a crank shaft. Putting any other type of head on a crank shaft could possibly break the head.
go to harbor freight and get a bushing/pilot tool for about $30, works wonders , I'm a mechanic
