Most likely, but not necessarily. It all depends on what kind of motherboard you have. Most modern motherboards require SATA cables to connect to storage devices, but there are some that can still use a PATA (also known as IDE) cable for HDDs. Regarding SSDs, most of them connect to motherboards through SATA cables, but there are some that can be connected to the motherboard through a PCIe X4 slot.

Connect new hdd and check for proper jumper connection. Configure both HDD to master and slave if they are connected using same IDE cable or if they both have different set of IDE cables, then just connect the HDD and provide power cable from SMPS.. Similar for SATA HDD

As far as interfaces goes you have two main types SATA and IDE. SATA being the newer of the technologies and using a small plug type cable to connect to your motherboard, where as IDE uses a wide ribbon type cable to connect to a large slot on the motherboard. There are two types of SATA as well. SATA-I and SATA-II. SATA-I runs at speeds up to 150mb/s and SATA-II runs ar speeds up to 300mb/s. You can only have 1 Sata HDD per Sata connector, however on IDE you can have 2 IDE, 1 set to master the other to Slave or if supported both set to CSS (Cable Select). So you can have 4 Sata HDD and 2 IDE HDD per IDE channel. One thing you need to be aware of is your Power Supply.
