It is quite easy to connect a single computer to the internet and have other computers on a network access the internet through that computer. The host computer's IP address needs to be 192.168.0.1 or the first computer on the local subnet eg: 192.168.1.1 is also possible. The connecting computers then need to have the host computers IP set as the gateway in the network config.

The problem with this setup is that the host computer needs to be turned on for other computers to access the internet. A existing network also needs to be in place or at least a direct connection between the two computers.

The 'router' to which I think you are refferring normally has a host of other capabilities, such as wireless as well as a firewall and a web interface for setting it all up. They work very well and allow you to connect any computer at any time to the internet. They normally also take care of any networking needs you may have and come well recommended.

A 4 port adsl router with wireless and firewall should be your first choice. They are not normally that expensive...

Do you need a PC in order for a laptop to work via a router?

A laptop is a PC. You don't need a desktop PC to configure a router, you can use a laptop to do so, by connecting to the router via a network adaptater - either via wifi or ethernet. Both ways of connecting are included on laptops nowadays.

For a wireless router to work does the computer with ist have to be on is the other computer to get the wireless signal from that computer?

If you do have a wireless router on, you don't need any other computer to be on, say if you have a laptop downstairs, and a computer with the router upstairs, the computer can be off, but the router has to stay on, and you can access the internet using the laptop from downstairs, if you have a good enough signal. Hope this helps!

What does my wireless for your laptop wont work on your password protected router you put the password in but it wont work its works on other routers that use passwords?

You need to make sure that your wireless adapter supports the security. Check if the network requires WPA2, if does and you cannot connect to it, it means your adapter can't work with and the router has to configured to work with first generation of WPA.

What sort of wireless does my laptop need?

Any laptop manufactured during the past five to ten years will have an 802.11 b, g, or n wireless interface. Any standard 802.11 b/g/n wireless router will work with any b/g/n laptop, but you may wish to use your computer's Device Manager to see which type your laptop has since you may not want to buy a more expensive 802.11n router if your laptop can only use 802.11b speeds.
