Depends on the severity of the crime. If you are involved in a police investigation and if you have some involvement in the crime obtain a lawyer and if questioned by the police uphold you 5th amendment right and DO NOT SPEAK!!! Defendants usually dig their own grave by talking and making statements to law enforcement. Lawyer up and tell them where to contact your lawyer at.

A lawyer's role is to ensure that your rights are protected during the interview. In the UK failure to answer questions during a police interview can actually count against you if th ecase goes to court, especially if you are asked the same question in court that the police asked you. If you then answer the question in court, the court can draw its own conclusions why you didn't answer the question when the police asked you during their investigation, i.e. it can draw the conclusion that you're lying and have had time between the interview and court date to think up an answer. As an ex-police officer my advice is to always seek legal advice, innocent or not, whether you then choose to take the lawyer with you into the interview is then your decision but you will at least know where you stand legally. Using a lawyer does NOT mean you're guilty.
