just a ratchet. put square in square push down on tensioner
auto store usually special order for a timing belt tensioner or belt tensioner
yeh you're a tool!
A special tool is required. The tool depresses the check ball in the end of the tensioner so that it can be compressed and locked.
The service information says to use Miller special tool 8186. I always replace the hydraulic tensioner when I am working on a 2.7L.
pulley tensioner replacement%ford ranger xlt 3.2l 2wd instructions. do use an ALLEN wrench to loosen the spring or is it a special tool
use small pin to depress ball valve in bottom of tensioner. using fingers compress tensioner. this is to keep the tenioner from exerting too much pressure on the timing chain.
but the special tool for taking it off, it goes inside the tensioner pulley so you can pull it back to release the tension to take of the belt, but dont let go just have the other one ready to go because if you let go its very hard to get it back up. put it on the same way you took it off.
Yes you need a wrench to loosen the tensioner and then release the belt slowly from the bolt in the top of alternator after that you would need a long and strong screwdriver (crowbar) to release it from the pulley it self. Do not forget to draw the diagram of how the belt serpentine around the pulley.
There is an automatic tensioner that keeps tension on the belt. THere should be a label in the engine compartment somewhere giving you a diagram of the path of the belt and showing where the tensioner is and which way it turns to loosen the tension. On the 1995 GMC Sierra that I just worked on, I loosened the nut on the front of the tensioner a little, then I used a big pipe wrench on the tensioner itself to rotate the tensioner assembly counterclockwise then removed the belt while still holding the tensioner, then gradually released the tensioner. From looking at it I guess there is a special tool you can use to do this, you might want to check with Advance Auto. or whoever your closest auto parts store is to see if they will loan you the tool.
turn belt tensioner clockwise to loosen there is a special tool you can get as loaner tool
pull the tensioner to relieve the tension and slip the belt over the alternator pulley. The tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley below the alternator. The tensioner takes a special tool that fits into a square hole in the side of it. Or you can use an 18 mm socket on the tensioner's pulley bolt. Follow the decal near the right front corner of the engine compartment to route the new belt.
If you look you will see a hole for either a 1/2 " or 3/8" ratchet. Also, I had to buy a special tool like a long wrench to move the bolt far enough to losson the tensioner enough. They sell them at carquest.
