They are never required, but I always recommend them for novices. I have been doing this professionally for years and still typically use them, even in my own vehicles. Its just not worth the time and effort to hard wire them most of the time. Particularly on Hyundais, where I have found it pretty difficult to find reliable information on wire colors. If not properly tested an verified, it can effect performance and sound quality from the system.
