Yes. It not only provides water circulation and oxygen but houses essential bacteria that keeps your water quality healthy. As soon as it's turned off, that bacteria starts to die. The only time you turn it off is when you're doing you're weekly partial water change.

Live fish should never be kept in a goldfish bowl. A fish in a goldfish bowl is condemmed to live in misery/agony and will surely die way before its due time. Air Bubbles will do no good at all. An air pump will only be of benefit if it is driving a cycled filter and is kept on 24/7. This will improve your water quality. There are three basic rules for keeping fish successfully. If you follow the rules you will stand a chance of the fish surviving and doing well. If you don't follow the rules I can guarantee you will constantly have problems with the fish having constant health problems. The rules are :- 1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water. :- Every fish tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every fish tank needs to have at least 50% of its water changed every week..

As long as you have a filter running on your tank, you may not need an air pump provided that you get enough surface movement from the filter.
It certainly doesn't hurt to add an air pump with either a bubble wand, stone, or disc as goldfish like to swim in the bubbles, and it adds additional oxygen to the water.

Yes, since the water is not moving naturally, the pump is the only way the water can be oxygenated. The fish will die if there isn't an onxygen infusion into the water.

What does an aquarium pump do?

Most of them pump air into the tank so that the fish can breathe better. You should get one if you have a bamboo shrimp, I know from expirience. The usefull thing an air pump can do is to drive a filter which is designed to remove the poisons that occur in every fish tank. Simply using it to blow bubbles is a waste.

What does an electric air pump do for aquariums?

An electric air pump oxygenates the water in an aquarium, this allows the fish in the fish tank to breath. if there was no air pump the water would lose its oxygen and the fish would drown.

Can not having an air pump kill your aquarium fish?

if you have 1 or 2, then no. just dont put a tight cover on the cage because the fish use our oxygen from the top of the water to breathe. if you have a bunch of fish, you might need one. :) It is possible your fish will not survive without the pump. It depends on what you are using to induce air into the water. There are some varieties of fish that do not need a pump such as gold fish and bettas. Call your local Pet store for more information when in doubt. Most fish tank kits come with a pump included. Technically, the "air pump" is not necessary at all; oxygen does not get into the water from the bubbles. What the bubbles really do is cause the water to circulate, bringing water up from the bottom of the tank to the top of the tank where it can pick up oxygen from the air. Any other method of circulating the water in the tank would work just as well.

I put an air pump in my tropical fish tank and sever of my neon fish died why is that?

Maybe its because the air taken in from the air pump is toxic to fish. Try not to spray or use chemicals such as air fresheners, detergent etc near the pump. Hope this helps.

We've had a goldfish for nearly 2 days but the water in tank have gone misty and the fish is up the top all the time what can i do?

You need an air pump and a filter in your tank to purify the water. Along with that the nitrogen cycle for the fish will not be disturbed as well as there being more oxygen for the fish to breath.
