Our spinal cord protects the nerves that send messages to the brain. It is made up of a series of connected bones or vertebrae.

Commonly occurring in the lower back, Spondylolisthesis develops

when a vertebra slides over the bone beneath it.

Infection, overuse of the affected joint, lack of exercise, and aging are a few reasons why Spondylolisthesis occurs. The degree of slippage determines how severe the symptoms are.

There are different ways in which spinal fixation is approached. Some approach it from the back of the spine, known as Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion while some approach it from the side known as Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion. Both methods can be used depending on the patients’ medical history.

Spondylolisthesis is a painful spinal condition that occurs when one vertebra (spinal bone) slips forward from its normal position in relation to the vertebra below it. This can occur as a result of a congenital weakness or deformity you were born with, as a result of weakness of supporting ligaments that is part of the aging process, or as the result of injury in which parts of the affected spinal bones are fractured and ligaments are torn. The degree of forward slippage can be very small or almost complete in which the two vertebrae are almost not in contract with each other.

For a traumatic spondylolisthesis it is probably would be best to seek medical attention since there would likely be significant emergency treatment required for an injury so great as to fracture part of the spine and tear ligaments.

For a congenital or arthritic spondylolisthesis it might be best to seek the conservative management of a chiropractor who has special techniques to reduce the misalignment of the forward slippage. If the results of conservative management do not result in significant pain reduction you will be referred for medical management, or perhaps to a physical therapist who can also work with this problem.
