YES you do need an Xbox 360 hard drive to go on xbox live. the only way to play xbox live without a hard drive is if u keep on making temporary accounts that will disappear after u turn the xbox 360 off and you have to keep on paying for gold membership every time u turn on your xbox, which is wasting money. SO the only way not to waste money and to play on xbox live is by using a hard drive. And there is a chance (depending on the game) that u can't even play the game; so you can only stay on the dashboard.
