Yes, because the humidity needs to be a bit above average. Also, they sometimes prefer to drink out of a sponge. You need to have the sponge in a ocean-water dish that is deep enough for the hermit crab to submerse in. Thus giving a choice of drinking from the sponge, drinking from the water itself, or soaking in the dish - which helps with molting and gives the crab a natural option for bathing like he would have in the wild. make sure there are always BOTH fresh and salt water dishes in your crab tank - dechlorinated and de-metalled water is vital to your crab's survival! and the salt water should NOT be table salt! you need ocean salt - like oceanic or instant ocean found in pet stores for aquariums. table salt is harmful to hermit crabs.
No hermit crabs only eat the sponges if they are in a terrible condition like at board walks becausr they have nothing to eat. Hermies can live for over 6 yrs in captivity if taken care of.
Hermies are scavengers and will eat all fruits, veggies, all parts of eggs, shrimp, kelp, and salmon and lean (not fatty) meat.
Stay away from human food like Pizza, twinkies, seasonings like on meat, and foods with table salt in them. (sea salted foods are ok) (table salt kills them).

yes, you will have to clean your craps cage or aquarium. if you don't clean the cage left over food and droppings will rot and kill your pet crab. the number of crabs you have that is the number of times you will need to clean it a week.
No you can not, it is advised that you use an dried organic sponge. I do not advise using a sponge since it can usually accumulate bacteria, and the crab usually tears it apart. If you want to use it for keeping the humidity levels adequate in the tank, I suggest getting a spray bottle and filling it with filtered water and spraying the tank with it every so often. It would really help if you bought some coconut fibers, like a coconut fiber wall. It will create more humidity that the crab likes.
hermit crabs need a sponge in the water bowl
Salt water hermit crabs need to live in ocean water that has been properly set up (like a reef aquarium). Land hermit crabs need access to both fresh and salt water but live the majority of their lives on land.
they need dechlorinated fresh water, and dechlorinated salt water made with aquarium salt.
Hermit crabs do need both types of water but they need both water because they need to clean themselves and they just drink salt water.
hermit crabs need to live in 70-80 degree temprature
I'm not so sure if they need a companion, but they certainly enjoy company. If you are getting pet hermit crabs it would be advisable to get three or four, and as hermit crabs aren't too expensive, you should think about it.
The kind of hermit crabs most people think of are Land Hermit Crabs. They live on land, and need at least enough water to submerge themselves. Land Hermit Crabs do need sea salt to keep their body chemistry balanced, and as such, need access to both salt and fresh water. Marine Hermit Crabs require a full saltwater aquarium to survive. Such tanks are elaborate, and should be researched thoroughly before purchase. Saltwater pets of all sorts are often regarded as difficult to care for.

No hermit crabs need high humidity (70-85%)
Hermit crabs in captivity cannot mate. Unless you live on a tropical island with wild hermit crabs, there's no need to worry. They were probably just playing.
