Yes, it can! I have researched quite a bit on freshwater aquariums as well as molly breeding and from my personal experience owning a gold dust molly and balloon mollies, they can interbreed within their species, my gold dust male impregnated my balloon molly, and her fry turned out to be a cross between the two types of fish, which were adorable! You want to check for signs of her being pregnant, their should be a triangular gravid spot near her anal fin which is darker then the rest of her body, as well as unusual behaviours such as swimming in one spot and hiding, you also should be able to notice a size difference in your molly. i am guessing it is. if it is pregnant separate it from all the other fish and put it in a 5 gallon to a 55 gallon tank with a heater filter and light . then after the babies are born put the mother back in the tank it was in . feed the fry powdered egg yolk brine shrimp micro worms or powdered flaks.

How do you know when a molly is pregnant?
Sometimes you can tell by looking at the fish's belly. Many times right above the anal fin you can see a black spot forming. This spot is called a gravid spot. Which tells you there are tiny fish developing inside the mother. However with some color types of these fish, it's nearly impossible to see this spot. Yo can also look at the general size of the fish. Take note of whether or not it's belly seems to be expanding. And if you have more than 1 molly, is this ones belly bigger than theirs? Odds are that your Molly is most likely pregnant, livebearers rarely waste any time in this regard.

I'm pretty sure they can. We recently stocked a tank with black mollies and gold balloon mollies; they were all from the same tank in the pet store. A few hours after we put them in our tank, one of the gold balloons had a ton of babies. Five of them made it and are thriving. They seem to be a combination of black and greyish brown and some of them definitely have a balloon shape to them. So we're fairly certain they were a combo of black regular and gold balloons (there were no other kinds of fish in the tank).
