The South remained in the Union after the North won the American Civil War and defeated the South in battle. It would have been better if we had abolished slavery when we became a nation. The Declaration of Independence said: All Men Are Created Equal. It was an obvious double standard, in 1776, that while we said it, we still had slavery in the colonies. It would have been better if we could have abolished slavery by peaceful means, as England, France, Canada and other nations did inspired by William Wilberforce and Capt. John Newton's song Amazing Grace.

Why do you think that the Border states stayed in the Union but would not provide soldiers to fight the war?
Many of them stayed in the Union, because they were occupied, and many felt that the Confederate government in Richmond could Never defeat the Union government in Washington DC. They stayed because they did not think the Civil War would end slavery and they could still keep their slaves even if they stayed in the Union. It was not until 1844, after the reelection of President Abraham Lincoln, that they found out that slavery would be abolished in the USA once and for all. Of course they did not provide soldiers to fight the war, but, it was obvious to almost everyone that there was simply no way the Confederates could defeat the Union. The South lacked industry, a Navy, and manpower to win the war. All the South had was cotton and slaves.

The border states did not like the slavery and they got very upset and from my side of an opinion I would think theyn would of left the union but then they stayed in the union and they helped stop slavery. The swtates allowed slavery yet they have remained in the union.
