If you're talking about your pool filter, it should be set to filter or run. Use the bypass or recirculate setting if you wish to circulate the water without having the water pass through the filter. Use the backwash setting to clean the filter.
What chemicals do you use when first setting up your pool?
When you set up your pool, you use a lot more chlorine than you will use for maintenance. You are killing all the bacteria in the water. After a few days when the pH stabilizes, you can work on balancing the pH.

Need more specific info A multi valve pool filter is a common configuration of valve and filter for a swimming pool system. The piping into and out of the filter is attached to a multivale. A multivalve has has several positions. One type of multi valve has six positions: backwash, waste, filter, closed, rinse and recirculate. (These valve positions are used on a DE filter. A sand filter may be different.) Use the filter setting in the nromal operation of your pool. This setting receives water from the pump and directs it to the dirty side of the filter media and then receives weater from the clean side and directs it to the pool. Use the Backwash setting to flush the DE from the filter and to a drain. Use the waste setting to flush water directly from the pump to the drain. The closed position is, well, closed. Rinse? Recirculate?
How do you vacuum your salt water pool?
You can vacuum a salt water pool the same way you would a non salt water pool. If you are vacuuming on the filter setting, your filter will help to clean the debris out of the pool. If you are dealing with a very dirty pool and use the waste setting, you will be wasting some of the water from the pool in the process. Depending on how much water you take out and need to refill, you will most likely need to add some salt back in to get your salt level back to normal operating levels.

Would you shock a salt water pool or use algaeize or more salt?
Salt generators make the same chemical, sodium hypochlorite, that you buy at the store. The major difference is that it costs a lot more to make than to buy it. See other posts I have made in this arena for more info.A salt water pool IS a chlorine pool. Period! IF it needs shocking you shock it the same way as any chlorine pool, by adding more chlorine either by manually adding it or setting the SWCG to the boost or shock setting.

What will keep pool pump from sucking water from pool?
The pool pump does suck the water from the pool. Then it goes thru the filter and (if you use have the following) thru the heater and chlorinator then back into the pool. So - nothing will keep it from sucking water from the pool - but that's a good thing. Now - if you set the valve to a different setting - then it might actually send the water to a waste line - maybe that's what you meant. If that's the case -then the pool pump will eventually drain your whole pool if you have it set to get the water from the bottom drain (another valve).
