Afghanistan does not produce any oil nor does it have any proven oil reserves. Its strategic importance is due to its location. Afghanistan would be an important place of transit for oil coming from Central Asia through pipelines to the Arabian Sea. A proposed pipeline coming from fields in Turkmenistan could pass through Afghanistan and Pakistan and to the sea, providing an alternative to the current pipelines that run through Russia.

Even though there isn't any record of proven oil deposits in Afghanistan, in the 1960s both German and French companies were hired to explore the possibility of oil. The unofficial story is that Afghanistan has oil, especially in the south and the west. Another part to this story is that the Shah Iran summoned the Afghan King for a meeting and upon his arrival back home, the Afghan King placed a lid on the whole idea of oil in Afghanistan.
