Since federation Australia has been pretty well free of the control of England. When the system was originally set up it was set up to recognise the Queen as the head of state and the Governor General as her go between. Until recently the House of Lords in Britain could overrule the Australian Supreme Court. The Australian People enjoy a standard of living and personal freedoms as well as social services unequalled in many parts of the world and they feel that it is partially the result of the way our government and constitution are set up. That is our head of state has absolutely no power in the day to day running of the country. The only real effect he has had on the Australian Government is that he had to sack the government once because as a result of a stalemate between Australia's leading parties the public service was going to run out of money. So come the time when a referendum is held to decide if Australia should become a republic, the voter s in their wisdom and in the knowledge that politicians were basically untrustworthy said NO. Or to put it more succinctly if the wheels ain't broke don't fix it.

so now you know no why

Australia has a queen. Australia is a constitutional monarchy. For all intent and purpose Australia is an independent country that is democratically run. Its leader is the Prime minister of the federal government. There is a constitutional connection with the British monarchy that makes the monarch of Britain the titular head of Australia.
