Possibly the best known example of a "south star" in Australia is the constellation "The Southern Cross". This is seen throughout the Southern Hemisphere and below latitude 30 degrees in the Northern hemisphere.

Australia does not have any specific "South Star" that is recognisable and stands alone.

Why was an extra star added to the federation star symbol?

When the Commonwealth of Australia was formed in 1901, it consisted of just the six original colonies of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland. The six points of the Federation Star (also known as the Commonwealth Star) represented the six states of Australia. In 1908, an extra star was added to represent the Territories of the Commonwealth of Australia. These territories had not yet been formed or delineated, but the Federal Capital territory (now Australian Capital Territory) was in the planning stage. The extra point now represents both mainland territories and the seven offshore territories.
