California has the highest population of any state, about 37 million people. Wyoming is the least populous US state with only about 560,000 residents.

Both California and Wyoming have the same number of US Senators (2), so the number of individuals representedby a California senator is much greater than the number of individuals represented by each Wyoming senator.

At the same time, California has more US Representatives(53) than Wyoming (1) in the House. Here, again, the number of individuals represented by a California representative (around 700,000) is much larger than the number represented by the single Wyoming delegate (560,000). This disparity is caused by the fact that each state is guaranteed one member of the House.

This results in each citizen of Wyoming having a slightly higher proportional representation in the US House, and a much larger proportional representation in the US Senate.

How does the US Constitution create a system that underrepresents urban areas?

The constitution under represents urban areas by giving equal representation to rural areas as it does to urban areas. For example, Wyoming and California are represented in the same way even though California has many more people.

The house of congress at which representation is based on congress?

There are two parts of Congress: the Senate and the House of Representatives. Representation in the Senate is independent of population; therefore all states get the same amount of representation (2 Senators per state). Representation in the House of Representatives is dependent on population, which means that there is a different amount of representatives representing each state.

Why are there the same numbers in the US Senate for each State?

The bicameral Congress of the United States is a compromise between large and small states. Large states have the advantage in the House because each state's representation is roughly proportional to its population, and small states have the advantage in the Senate because every state has the same representation no matter how large or small it is.

What percent of Wyoming residents support same-sex marriage?

According to a 2014 University of Wyoming survey, 39% of Wyoming residents oppose the legalization of same-sex marriage and 53% support it.A 2012 poll by University of California-Los Angeles showed that 41 percent of Wisconsin residents supported same-sex marriage.

Why do states have different numbers in the house of representative?

Representatives in the House of Representatives reflect population in each state. This is why California has the most seats, because they have the highest population. Conversely, the senate only awards 2 senate seats for each state, so it can be argued that this is unfair because then states like wyoming are afforded the same amount of political power as a state like California which reflects a much larger portion of the population.

How is each states representation in the same senate determined?

Each state has 2 Senators for a term of 6 years for each Senator. There is a total of 100 Senators..

It is fair that California has the same number of senators as Wyoming?

No but that is the nature of the California Constitution. By the same token there is the US Constitution which grants California 53 Members to the US House of Representatives and Wyoming only one. The Founding Fathers did not anticipate that a single state would someday have over 36 million residents or that a state like Alaska would exist that has only 1.03 persons per square mile.

Is Barbara Boxer a California State Senator?

Barbara Boxer is a U.S. Senator from California, which is not the same thing as a California State Senator. A California State Senator is a member of the California State Senate, which is part of the California State Legislature. The U.S. Senate is part of the U.S. Congress, which is part of the federal government. The term "California Senator" can be confusing, because it could refer to either a U.S. Senator from California or a California State Senator.

What was the New Jersey Plan?

The New Jersey Plan was a proposal for the US Constitution. It was focused on insuring that small states got an equal share of representation in the government. In the final compromise, the New Jersey Plan served as the model for the current US Senate, every state has the same representation, regardless of size and population.

What was the representation compromise?

The Representation Compromise gave both large states and small states the type of representation they asked for. This was done by changing the representation standards in the houses of Congress. Large states had wanted representation based on population. This standard was accepted in the House of Representatives, which allowed the number of representatives to be determined by state population. Smaller states wanted equal representation, despite population size. This was accepted by the Senate, in which all states have the same number of representatives.
