Some Canadians want Senators to be elected, while others believe that the Senate performs no useful purpose and should be abolished; other (though arguably a minority) believe that the Senate performs its functions properly as it is currently composed and should not be reformed.

Parliament is the legislative branch of Canadian government and consists of the Queen (represented by the Governor General), an appointed Upper House (the Senate), and an elected Lower House (the House of Commons). Bills must be passed by both Houses before they are enacted by the Crown.
It should be noted that unlike the United States system, members of the executive branch of government in Canada (i.e., the prime minister and most ministers) are also members of the legislative branch. The prime minister and most ministers have seats in the House of Commons, and are accountable to that elected House for the conduct and performance of the Government.
