Both drugs are different chemically and therefore one person may respond to one and not the other. They are both ordinarily tolerated quite well. Effexor has an indication for Major Depression and General Anxiety Disorder. Celexa has an indication for Major Depression and nerve related pain secondary to Diabetes. Doctors may also use the drugs for other conditions (called off label use). Both drugs effect serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmitters that can be related to depression, with Effexor requiring a higher dose to bring out the norepinephrine effect. Importantly one should give adequate time, at least 3 weeks to see the full effect at any one dose and not give up too quickly. Often at a low dose a person may not get a full response or any at all, so to insure that a medication "doesn't work" be sure that the dose has been titrated up to an adequate dosage for a sufficient time period. In addition Effexor has been around for much longer time and has 2 additional indications to those mentioned above Social Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder.
Since these are both SNRIs (serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), it is not indicated to take both Effexor XR and Cymbalta simultaneously. If a second antidepressant is needed, an SSRI or other class of antidepressant should be used to augment the SNRI.
XR at the end of the name of a medication indicates the medication is extended release. Efferin XR is not an actual medication, but Effexor XR is. Effexor XR is an antidepressant. It is prescribed for depression as well as anxiety.
Effexor XR is the American brand name for the drug venlafaxine.

It is the same drug, Effexor XR is the brand name drug made by Wyeth (now owned by Pfizer). Effexor XR is Venlafaxine XR however a generic drug would just say Venlafaxine rather than Effexor.
I don't know how safe it is, but I have been taking Xanax, Seroquel and Cymbalta (or Effexor XR before the Cymbalta) for about 1 1/2 years now. I take them together at night to sleep and it works well.

Second person to ask, NO, they do not test for antidepressants. - - - - - Effexor XR is known to throw off false positives for PCP.
Probably not a good mixture.
There's a generic form of Effexor XR but it is in a tablet, NOT a capsule. Ask your doctor about whether it will affect you differently.
I've had a drug interaction between it and effexor-xr. I think it has boosted the antidpressant. Would like to know if anyone else has had the same happen to them.

The withdrawal symptoms of Effexor XR include restlessness, irritability, weight gain, and tremors. Dose reduction is recommended to reduce possible side effects. Discontinuing use suddenly is not recommended.
Should you take Effexor xr and Diazepam together and if so what are the effects of long term use of both? (A period of 4yrs)
I cannot answer for everyone, but it helps with my depression. I was diagnosed with severe clinical depression. In an effort to avoid hospitalization, I was prescribed Effexor XR for the depression and Lunesta for the related insomnia. After two days the Lunesta did not work and the antidepressant was not helping either. My psychiatrist increased the Effexor and put me on Seroquel (as a "mood stablizer"), it has been the perfect conbination. I currently take 225mg of Effexor XR & 300mg of Seroquel.
