In 3x22 The Departed she decides she needs to make a decision but says its not about "forever," but instead "right now." She calls Damon and says it was always Stefan, despite loving Damon. She says it may be him if they had met first, then he remembers meeting her before her parents died and compelling her to forget. Then she dies and wakes up in transition. He knows she's dead because Alaric died. Stefan saved Matt, thus indirectly killing her, at her request.
