Islam respects the free will of anyone to make his/her own choice of beliefs and faiths. Muslims never used violence or force to push non Muslims to convert to Islam. Muslims were in control of India over one thousand years and never obliged Indians to convert to Islam. The same is true in Spain. The spread of Islam was (and till present) through free will of people.

"Islam" is a broad category, as is "non-believer". The Wahhabi and Salafi sects of Islam are often quite violent and rigid in the fundamentalist nature of their religion, and Christians and Jews are required to pay a tax or be killed. "Pagans" must convert or die. Less-strict factions of Islam do not try to implement these articles of their faith.

Islam is never a violent religion. Islam calls for peace and justice and good morals. If Islam calls for defending your lands and properties (called military Jihad) it does not mean violence. If Islam calls Muslims to struggle within themselves to be in the right path of God and not to commit sins, it does not mean violence, Islam calls for peace and tolerance.
