It can be set to both
Lan's typically use server based networking, but a Lan can have no server at all, just workstations that link together.
In a LAN, the use of a networking switch can minimize problems with packet sniffing by implementing IPsec at layer 3which encrypts transmissions across the network link. (These damn ITT tech questions can be a pain sometimes, eh?)
Wide area networking is also referred to just WAN and means a network that is not limited to a local area, local area network (LAN). The world wide WEB is the biggest WAN of all. An home would use a LAN. A typical office building would use a LAN. If you interconnect several LANs across a wide geographical range you end up with a WAN. Make sense?
I use LAN
LAN is a collection of computers with in certain distance say, a building or premises or within a city. A LAN can be a collection of wired computers or wireless computers or mixed. A wireless connection is a connection which uses radio frequencies to send and receive data, e.g. a mobile phone is an application based on wireless connection.

he most commonly used network topology is a hybrid topology called the Star Bus TopologyRead more: http://wiki.answers.com/What_is_network_topology_and_give_an_example_of_the_most_common_network_topology#ixzz1TrCMGlb6
There are a couple but the most common is the star
the popular connector used in lan network is RJ45
99.9% of laptops have LAN port, locate it and use it.
Switch for small LAN, Router for two or more
Networking in Linux is just like networking in windows. If you are using a debian based distribution then you can use network manager to select a wireless network. If you are talking about networking as in communicating with a windows machine you can use sanba the program for that.
If you use a network at all in a home situation then a LAN is common.
