Luke seems to have made two changes to the Old Testament genealogy: * According to the Old Testament, Aminadab was the son of Aram;

Shelah was the son of Arphaxad. * According to Luke's Gospel, Aminadab was the son of Admin and the grandson of Aram;

Shelah was the son of Kainan and grandson of Arphaxad. It don't agree. Luke gives twenty generations from Adam to Abraham, while Genesis (5:3-32; 11:10-26) and Chronicles (1 Chr 1:1-4; 24-27) both gives nineteen.

Luke traces Jesus' lineage back to Adam and shows how God's promises to Israel are fulfilled in Jesus but is this true?

If Luke's genealogy is true, then the Old Testament genealogy for David is in error, since Luke added two names into the list of David's ancestors, that are not in the Old Testament - Admin and Kainan.Luke shows that God's promise was fulfilled in Jesus because great men occurred in multiples of 7 generations starting from Adam, with: Enoch at 7; Abraham at 21; David at 35; Jesus at 77 - this is why he had to alter the original Old Testament genealogy, which would not have given this result.

Why does Matthew's Gospel include a genealogy?

The author of Matthew's Gospel included a genealogy for several reasons:To demonstrate that Jesus was descended from King David, and even Zorobabel;To assist in drawing a parallel between Jesus and Moses, with the father of Joseph being called Jacob in both the Old Testament and the New Testament;To prove through numerology that Jesus was destined for greatness. He demonstrated that there were 14 generations: from Abraham to David; from David to Josiah; from Josiah to Jesus. To do this, he had to ignore 3 kings in the Old Testament and have David in the preceding (as 14) and following (as 1) groups, but not so Josiah.Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says that there is little likelihood that Matthew's genealogy is strictly historical.
