It promulgated a formal constitution on October 4, 1824 and the first president of the United Mexican States was Guadalupe Victoria, being invested as president on October 10 of the same year.

At the time Mexico became a federal republic, it consisted of 19 states and 4 territories. Nowadays, it consists of 31 states and one federal district. The later is akin to Washington DC in the U.S.
