Answer 1
There is no requirement that a President show a birth certificate, only that he be a natural born citizen (a passport will prove that) and at the time the Constitution was written there was no such thing as a "birth certificate," instead births were registered in the local church. Thus the Constitution does not specify birth certificates as a required form of proof of citizenship for Presidents or anyone else.
Yet the President has shown one anyway and is the first President in American history to have done so. Obama has made public a "certification of live birth," which "birthers" -- people who doubt the president's citizenship -- claim is not the same as a birth certificate. The HI Dept. of Health, which is the agency that issues birth certificates in HI, say it is a birth certificate, and is the only kind HI gives.
In addition the President, in 2011, asked the Hi Department of Health to make an exception to their policies and make two certified photocopies of his birth certificate, a request they complied with. They have confirmed that they are true copies of the certificate they have on file and that current Health Department Director Fuddy personally witnessed the copying of said certificates. Additionally, at the request of the White House, a third certified copy of the certificate was sent directly from the Department of Health to Judge Malihi in Ga. based in part on which he ruled that President Obama is a natural born U.S. citizen and eligible to be on the ballot in the State of Ga.
The Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, two Hawaii newspapers, additionally, have produced August 1961 birth announcements for Obama. Meanwhile, Linda Lingle, Hawaii's Republican governor since 2002, has confirmed that the president was born in the Aloha State.

Of course Obama (and every other candidate for POTUS or Veep) has to produce a birth certificate. Per Article II, Section 1, Paragraph 5, of the Constitution (14th Amendment for the Veep), a candidate must be a 'natural born citizen' and 'have attained to the age of 35 years". Only a valid birth certificate plus proof of his parents' citizenship at the time of the candidate's birth can meet those requirements.
A 'natural born citizen' is a person who was born on the soil (jus soli) and of citizen parents (jus sanguinis) per stare decisis law (see Minor v. Happersett, 88 U.S. 162 (1875)).
He showed his birth certificate to the public in 2008. Prior to that he would also have had to show it to get a drivers license, passport, register for college, etc.
