Originally, he simply turned the guitar around and restrung it himself. That meant, of course, that the pick guard on the guitar was upside-down. As Paul acquired more money, he could afford to go in search of left-handed Guitars that suited his fancy.

However, he does play "true" right handed guitars that have been altered to be playable left handed.

He played a right-handed guitar backwards in the early days before left handed guitar/bass models were available. These days he can be seen playing true left handed instruments though.
