Ringo HATES onions in any form.
"Ringo Starr" sounded like a cowboy name, which suited young Richard Starkey's love of Western movies. "Ringo" came from his fondness for wearing rings. ("Why do you wear so many rings on your fingers?" "Because I can't fit them all through my nose!") "Starr" came from a promoter wanting to bill Starkey's solo drumming spot as "Starr Time".
The resemblance is accidental.

Ringo Starr, wasn't is real name it was his show name. His real name was Richard Starskey. He did have a family, consisting of two sisters and a brother. His parents were divorced, and he didn't like talking about his family, that was Richard's family. Asked once in a late-Sixties interview if he thought Ringo Starr was the best drummer in the world, Lennon flippantly answered "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles!" All the same, Lennon always counted on Starr's drumming to enhance the music they made together, and encouraged later drummers he worked with (including Andy Newmark) to "play it more like Ringo".
