If you use the depo shot correctly it will work automatically what I mean by correctly is getting the shot during your cycle I would suggest getting the shot during the first day of your period :)

How does the depo shot work?
depo is injected into the muscle, it tricks the body into thinking you are pregnant this is why your period is stopped. you do not ovulate at all.
If you get the depo shot while your on your cycle but your cycle is abnormal dose it still work?
I would call the doctor to be sure. But as far as what I have heard, it does still work. A lot of people i know get weird cycles BECAUSE of the depo shot

I have had regular periods since I started depo in Oct 09.... I am due for my 4th shot in July and have been bleeding now for over a month.. I am very aniemic so am choosing to discontinue the shot. I started it to help with fibroids and cysts and extreme pain, it work until recently the pain returned, the clots returned and so did the heavy flow.

All women's side effects vary after receiving the Depo Provera shot. I only had one Depo shot. I was due for another in early December 07 but decided not to get the shot when it was due after bleeding for four weeks in November on the shot. It is now March 08 and I am still waiting for my period to arrive. I called my doctor and he said that it can take several months to get your period again even after one shot. Everyone is different but I did not expect for it to take so long to start my period again after just one shot - but that's not a bad thing - the whole reason I tried Depo was to try to stop my period - which didn't work out well at first given I had a pretty regular four week period in the middle of the shot. This isn't really an answers to your question but just another case of no periods after depo provera. My last shot was Feburary 2008, it should have worn off may 08... Its not Septermber 09... that's 16 months and I still have not seen my period... I had the shot 3 times.. Bad choice :S I don't want babies now, but maybe in my later years, I want my periods back :(

umm my gf is on the depo shot and it is supposed to work better than the pills and some times she still has her period. and i have heard that some people dont have it at all. so i guess it all just depends
