The V6 Saturn used a timing belt. The 4 cylinder's used a timing chain.
05-06 use a timing chain 02-04 use a timing belt
When I bought my '02 I was told that it no longer has the timing belt/chain that needs to be replaced at around 60,000 miles (my '96 did have a timing belt that needed to be replaced every 60,000 miles). I have put over 80,000 mi. on my '02 and nice to know I won't be getting surprised by timing belt failure. Did have to have the serpentine belt on the engine replaced recently though.
I have 2001 Mazda Tribute 4WD with 3.0 V6 and it uses timing chain, not a belt.
It has a timing belt as do all 3 engine variances in the 98-02 Accords. Hope this helped. Peace
If you have a V6 you should have a timing belt. While you are doing that you may as well replace the water pump. The timing belt drives the water pump also.
my vectra is registered aug. 02 on the new shape with the 2.0 dti and have been told from the dealers that its a chain and not a belt, hope this helps Dave
Belt Drive
Chain
Valves can be adjusted via the rocker arms, under the rocker arm cover. Remove this via the service manual, and they should be adjusted to give a small clearance, appx .02 inches. Timing is a different story, if it is your valve timing, you need to locate the timing belt or chain adjuster, and get a timing light. Sync the timing light to the timing mark on the belt or chain via the adjustment mechanism.
every 90,000 miles average to replace timing belt
The first model year for the Saturn Ion was 2003. It uses a GM Ecotec engine that has a chain cam drive just like the original S series Saturns produced until 2002.
