2002 L-series used a belt.
The V6 uses a timing belt. The 4 cylinder uses a timing chain.
this specific year came with a timing belt instead of a chain, even though it has the v6 engine, which surprised me as well

No, the configuration of the DOHC V6 did not work out with a timing chain. They were equipped with a timing belt which must be changed every 100,000 miles. Don't even ATTEMPT to change the belt without the proper alignment tool.
My 2002 Saturn L300 was doing this also, it was the BCM (Body Control Module). Cost about $600 to fix at the dealership
6.5" 3 way speakers with reiangular screws.
My 2002 Saturn 3.0 L, v 6 takes 5 quarts.
The "L" series Saturns came in two varieties; the 4 cylinder (which used a timing chain), and the V6 which used a timing belt. To replace the timing belt on the V6 you must use the specially designed tool to lock the camshafts and crankshaft in place while you replace the belt. To replace the timing chain on the 4 cylinder, you must remove the front housing. It's easier to just remove the engine.
It bolts to the top of the intake manifold. It should have to large plugs on top of it

It sounds like your "Timing Belt" broke. Have it checked, if it's broken it should cost around $200 to have it replaced on your six cylinder L300.
Approx. $1,000 USD from a Saturn dealer. You may want to also change the water pump at the same time.
