They are both the same engines. You refer to a long block as being a compleat engine assy. 350 small block is what it means. It's a 350 and that is called a small block.

The most obvious diff is 350 CUBIC inches is much small that 496 cubic inches. Also likely the 350 is a small block where as the 496 is a big block. The 496 will be a physically appearing bigger motor if that is the case. With great displacement also comes greater power or power potential. A mildly modified 350 can produce more power than a stock 496. Big Block Chev weighs in at around 675 Pounds and a 350 small block weighs in at about 575 pounds.
The large block has more mass than the small one. Same principle with rocks.
327 is a Small block. 265 thru 400 were small blocks but to confuse you more the 396 thru 454 were big blocks. Unless you really want to be confused, I won't mention the 348 was a big block. :)

Although I do not know the answer you need to be more specific. There is more than one small block Chevy. There is the 262, 265, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, & 400. All of these were small blocks made at different times, but they do not all weigh the same. The basic block weights approximately 181. The weight differences through out the years for the bare block did not vary more than a few pounds.
It will be dissipating more power than a small signal diode.
There is no easy or quick way to get more power out of a smaller generator. Trying using it to only do a small number of tasks at a time, or if you want to do more, perhaps invest in a bigger generator.
