No a diode will not work when the ignition key is off.
A battery cannot be drained by a shorted diode when the ignition key is off.

Defective ignition switch.
The key and the ignition lock are badly worn. Try a different key if it doesn't fix it you need to replace the ignition lock.
Ouch .. that sucks. The ignition is worn. Probably warned you of it by being tricky a few times. You want to lube it up with some penetrating oil. If it works again DO NOT TURN IT OFF! Leave it in the on position and bring it to Mercedes or get to taking out your ignition switch. they are available for sale on MB parts sites. Great thing.. the key is needed to take off the ignition. So.. if lubing it up doesnt work. You are in for some cutting.
If the key is broken off in the ignition of the 96 Crown Victoria it will have to be picked out. If the key is out and broken, a locksmith can use the broken pieces to make a new key or rekey the ignition.
In most cases its because the the key is not in the OFF position.
First, replace the battery. Then, cycle the ignition between on and off three times. Turn the ignition key into the on position, then the off position, three times. The computer will recognize the key, reboot the computer, and release your key.
pull the cover off the steering column and there should be a wire connected to the ignition switch. pull it off and put the key in the switch.
