Glow plugs need changing. Is it diesel?
You can convert a petrol engine into a diesel engine by changing the fuel injectors. The fuel filters will also need to be changed.
it could be for the spark plug, petrol engines dont need glow plugs, diesel engines do
faulty glow plugs, need replaceing then shouldbe fine.
check the glow plug, if it is diesel
the glow plugs are located inside the the valve covers on the engine' the wire harness goes thru the cover gaskets.so this is a major job.if you break a gasket while removing, they cost about $70 , each to replace. you also need special tools to remove glow plugs. it is much easier and safer to take the truck to a reputable diesel mechanic.
No they do not, After engine is running there is no need for glow plugs because there is enough heat in the cylinders to warm the fuel. The glow plugs are designed to heat up the cold diesel fuel on start up only. Actually glow plugs will cycle briefly after engine start up to keep the cold fuel from bringing down cyl temp until the engine warms up. A power stroke will keep glow plugs on for up to 180 sec. A chev will run considerably less I believe.
Timing an engine requires that it have spark plugs, a diesel engine only has glow plus, no timing required. Now, if the valve to piston timing is off, you will need to replace the timing belt or chain, aligning the timing marks then. Get a repair manual like a Chilton's.
Diesel engines, unlike gas engines do not have any spark plugs. The reason that they do not need a spark plug is because in diesel engines, the air is compressed much, much more than in a gas engine. The more that you compress the air, the more that the air is heated. Diesel engines have so much compression that the air inside of your cylinder becomes super heated and there is no need for a spark plug. The air is so hot that when the diesel fuel is injected into the cylinder, the diesel fuel ignites and the piston is pushed down via the "explosion" that takes place when the piston reaches tdc(top dead center). Because of this, diesel engines need to warm up. This is why diesel engines have glow plugs. The glow plugs warm the block and help the engine to heat up faster.
Depending on the type of fuel system, a diesel engine may or may not use glow plugs. Glow plugs are generally used on Indirectly Injected diesel engines. They are used to heat the air that is drawn into the engine when the engine is cold. Since diesel engines use the heat created by compression to ignite the fuel/air charge, Glowplugs provide easier and smoother start ups. A Direct Injected diesel engine may use an Intake Air Heater or nothing at all, since the fuel being injected into the combustion chamber is atomized to a much finer degree (and therefor ignites at a lower temperature) than the relatively low injection pressure Indirect Injection system.
Probably the Glow plugs (the diesel pre-heats) need replacing.
A diesel vehicles does not need to be running. A diesel ignition in a Diesel engine comes from compression and not spark.
