Not necessarily, a guy can be mean simply because he is mean and you're only finding out now or he is being mean because he is upset and/or wants out of the relationship. This does not always mean it is because he has a new girlfriend or is interested in someone else. However, if he is interested in someone else, and you have reason to suspect this besides his mean behaviour, then you should confront him directly. If that is something you're not able to do right now safely, maybe you should take a break or distance yourself. My main concern here is your safety and this will depend on your understanding of how far his mean attitude towards you can push his boundaries. Ensure your safety first and then you can resolve the issue when he agrees to meet over coffee with a friend of yours to keep an eye on you, even if from a distance.
