Usually when you go to church that's exactly what you are there for, so it's hardly the place to start a romance. Perhaps after church ask him if he'd like to go for coffee and take it slow and easy and get to know him and let him know you. He probably takes his faith seriously and this is why he notices you at times and seems self absorbed other times. He's there for a reason and has little time for anything else. Ask him out!
