Does a lisp eventually go away following braces after wearing an orthodontic retainer for a long time?

I'm sorry that I can't answer your question but I can't help but to share that I too have a lisp - though it has only been one day and I've been crying my eyes out all day because my lisp is really bad and the language I speak most of the time (not English) has a lot of "s" sound, which makes the lisp extremely noticeable. I've done some research on the web as I'm sure you have - seems like the only thing you can to about the lisp is to keep practicing the words you can't pronounce ... what a pain.
Actually, I disagree with the official answer because if you had researched, majority of the answers say that your lips would go away within a few days. When I first got my retainers, I thought that I would never speak the same way again, but I did and my mouth got use to the extra plastic in it.

What will a retainer do?
A retainer is an orthodontic appliance that is designed to hold the teeth in a specific position. It can be a 'fixed' retainer, which means it is glued in place and is not removed, or it an be a removable retainer that can be removed to clean or eat. Retainers are necessary following orthodontic treatment because bone has a 'memory'; that is, it wants to return to its former position, and in doing so, it will undo all the work to straighten the teeth. By wearing the retainer (sometimes for several years) you make the bone 'forget' its former position, and eventually the teeth will remain in their new position without the retainer.
Can one wear a straightening retainer instead of braces for minor teeth problems?
Why certainly, I am 15 and I wear braces. I have heard that, depending on the severity of the problem, only a retainer is necessary to achieve the desired straightening. It is supposed to much cheaper too. An orthodontic appliance (straightening retainer) doesn't really make teeth more straight, even if the correction needed is minor. If you are not comfortable wearing braces, you can ask your dentist about invisalign.

Word of advise: WEAR YOUR RETAINER!
