No. The 72 Chevy more than likely came with a np203. You will need one of the following to mate with a 700r4 or 4l60e: np208, np231, or np241.

Depends on how mechanically inclined you are. Manual trans was originally an AX-15. You could put an NV3550 in its place. Auto trans was originally a 32RH. You COULD swap an AW4 from a Cherokee in. You'd gain an extra gear but you would have to wire it all in. Very involved.
