In communities where being openly gay can be dangerous, gay people usually adopt some discrete signal. Then the word gets out so the signal gets changed. (When I was in high school, the signal -- supposedly -- was wearing green socks on Thursday.) But whatever the signal is, it's just a way to start a conversation: "I like that ring. Where'd you get it?" If the guy is gay (and if he's interested in you) one thing will lead to another.
